Let's Taco 'Bout It

I find it quite interesting that the things that I miss about the grand ole' USA are things that aren't "American" culture. First it was sushi...when people think of a food associated with let's say Nebraska, sushi is not what comes to mind. My soul has been craving some bubble tea and guess what, that's not "American" either. And for certain, the perfect combination of meat, cheese, and tomatoes isn't either. My love for a good taco derives from going to El Chaparro in Lincoln and getting some beef tongue tacos. Oh my soul is just longing for them as I type this. But, we do what we have to where we are to feel at home, right?

This evening I was invited to Taco night #yumyum. Alessia, love you girl, was kind enough to host this lil shindig at her humble abode. The veggies were chopped, the cheese grated, and the meat seasoned... with actual taco seasoning. She let me know that the lil packets were from the states... so anyone who plans on visiting me :) feel free to bring taco seasoning and Lawry's #blessyouinadvance. The tacos, great. The nachos, beautiful. Mecca's tummy, satisfied.

As we all sat there, munching on this delicacy it occurred to us that this isn't an "American" dish. But when we describe our favorite foods from back home, it pops up. So what does that tell you? The US is not one culture, but a whole darn bunch in one place. And do not tell me that it's a melting pot. Think about it, if it's a melting pot that means everyone is assimilating to one thing. When you melt things together it becomes one thing, and that is not what I want. In my opinion, #mine, the US of A is a salad bowl. We have lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons, maybe some chicken, and some type of dressing. All these different ingredients are coming together to make something delicious. We don't have to assimilate to one thing in order to get along. I can be a carrot and you a cucumber and it will be completely fine.

So as you read this blog and eat your taco, I want you to appreciate what is at your fingertips in the states. You have the ability to experience all different cultures by sometimes taking a walk through a park. If you're on a college campus I know there are events you can attend to experience a culture other than your own. Go, and #justdoit because some don't have that luxury.

Take this sweet pea, and treat yourself to a taco. Don't forget the cheese.

Ahh Yes, the Most non-American, American dish I love
